non-existant public folders in directory

By asmith ·
Exchange server crashed last year, was able to salvage priv and pub mdb's, but had to re-create directory. Ever since then there are a couple of public folders that show up in the directory (inside Exchange Admin) but do not show up in Outlook clients. When I try to create Pub Folder with same name, Outlook says folder already exists with that name. Is there a way to re-sync everything up again?

Sounds like you have some orphaned public folders. You can safely remove the orphaned folders using this procedure:

1. Open the Exchange Administrator program and go to the server container.
2. Select the existing server and click the Propertiesbutton in the toolbar.
3. Click the Advanced tab and select the Consistency Adjuster button. Select the Synchronize With The Directory And Create New Directory Entries For Mailboxes That Do Not Have A Corresponding Directory Entry checkbox under the Public Information Store, select All Inconsistencies, and click OK.
4. Another dialog box will come up warning you of the implications of rehoming folders. Click OK to start the process. A dialog box will pop up while the adjustments take place.
5. Another dialog box will inform you when the synchronization is complete. Click OK to acknowledge this and click OK again to close the
server properties.
6. Expand the Public Folders hierarchy on the left side of the window in the Administrator's program. Open the properties of the public
folders that were orphaned. You should now be able to assign permissions to these folders. Give an administrator's account Owner permissions to the folder. Click OK twice to close the dialog box.

You can now remove the orphaned public folders from within an Exchange (Outlook) client.
