Norton antivirus security alert issue

Im, running windows xp home ed sp 2
The issue is with Norton antivirus 2003
This has been constantly updated all the time and is u to date regards subscription

Recently it has started popping up with a security alert window. Telling me-

Your computer is at risk in the following areas:

-virus protection is turned off

open your norton product to resolve these issues

I can assure you it is most definitely on and its driving me up the wall appearing every 5 seconds im just about to try and smash this computer!

help please
