Norton Personal Firewall up-date

By owens ·
I have Norton firewall 2003. This morning I got an up-date, and my whole computer froze up. The internet didn't work or anything. I had to un-install the firewall. I re-installed, got the latest up-date, and the same thing happened. Un-installed again, re-installed. This time I didn't go for the up-date. Now everything works again. Does anyone know what happened? I guess some firewall is better than none. Thanks for any help.

Norton Personal Firewall up-date

Well, after seeing your post, I went to live update and downloaded "Internet Security Program updates" for Norton. After live update downloaded and installed the update, a reboot was required. After the reboot I had no problems connecting to the internet. I run Windows XP Professional on this box with Norton Systemworks & Norton Personal Firewall intergrated with Systemworks[both 2003 versions].

Did your download and install require a reboot???

I built up enough nerve to go for the up-date again. Well the computer didn't crash, but most everything in the firewall settings is turned off. It won't let me change a thing. I never had this problem before. My computer is my own, I hate using any more passwords than I absolutely need. I never had any passwords for any Norton prodects that I know of. Perhaps this info will help someone help me. Thanks so much,
Roger

Back up everything [I make a complete copy of HD to cd-rw. Then I reinstall everything, I do not like to "reg edit" and I do think you have corrupted registry. BACK UP EVERYTHING NOW , do not wait till it is to late.

well I found out what your problem might be. If you are running Norton Internet Security & Norton Personal Firewall 2003 and Windows XP Pro or home version and downloaded and installed update # 6.04 and notice the following problems:
1. NIS,NPF icons are missing from the desktop or system tray
2.Computer runs much slower than normal
3.Programs take longer to pen
4.Icons for speakers are missing from the system tray.
This is caused by an updated version of NISUM.exe file version 6.0.2.2003
here's the link to the Symantec support page that outlines the fix.

Thank you so much, you hit the problem exactly, better than I even described it. Probably I was to upset. The only problem I have, is that the link you gave me doesn't take me to anything much, except if I want to buy something. I tried several times. Although I have the firewall re-installed, I am operating with out the up-date, until I get this information. I tried clicking support links but ended up getting lost in the maze. Here's the link I tried:

sorry the link didn't work. What you'll have to do is go to the symantec product support page for home & small office user. Then select free online support. Select start free online support. On the next page select Skip the automated support assistant [select skip this]. On the next page select Norton Personal Firewall for the product and your current version. On the next page select "I need help with" - a software issue, AND "and I want to solve" a - Live update issue. This will take you to the FAQ page. The first FAQ "Norton Internet Securty does not load on reboot after applying patch #6.04 via live update". The next page will outline problems and the fix.
