Novell Virtual Office

By Jim_MacLachlan ·
Has anyone else tried getting this product out to their users? How has your experience with it been?
I've installed it & while it started out pretty well, I'm finding that the devil is in the details. The general instructions look good on the surface, but there are a lot of details lacking & the support isn't there. Novell doesn't support it as one product, but as 4 & it can easily be more as you start leveraging the features. It makes documentation hard to find, even when it is there.

I have setup NVO a couple of times and it is a BIT of a learning curve but overall not so bad.

Once you get used to i-Folder and collaboration (obviously better with other users deployed than as a stand alone)you will learn to love it and can't live without it.

As a remote MCNE for a couple of clients, I find i-Folder invaluable as I have a laptop and see quite a few hotel rooms.

You should be able to buy the full documentation if it didn't come with your order, it is a great set of tools that really isn't that hard after you get the basics down, much like learning Windoze was (except the great tool part).

I have also seen a book or two in the computer stores but as it is still somewhat new there arent too many discount books.

Out of the box, VO does pretty much everything I wanted it to, although I had some problems with eGuide since the TID for Self-administration was wrong on one key point (Do NOT enable RBS in the eGuide Admin!!! Section 1 Step 6).

There are some parts of the Virtual Teams that will be tough on the users. The way files are handled, it opens them in the same window unlike everything else which opens a new window. Unless you right click & download.

I'd like to publish some maps of the corporate office but I can't seem to find the right place to put them. We're not using iPrint. I'd like to make it a link both on the home page & another in eGuide. I also need to get an FTP gadget installed & how do you clear a user's bookmarks if they edit them? If they do, they never receive updates when I update them in iManager.

All in all, a very good product, though. Minor, devilish details & there doesn't seem to be many using it yet. For the price ($0 extra with NW6.5) I'd think everyone would want it.
