NT -> W2K Migration, retaining NT PDC

By tmccleary ·
We are going to be installing three new Windows 2000 servers into a single NT domain environment with several NT 4.0 servers. One of these servers is the PDC and the rest are member servers. We are not upgrading the PDC, but we want to make one of the new W2K servers the new PDC, demoting the NT 4.0 PDC to a BDC.

Is it possible to do this and obtain the existing users, groups, etc. from the existing domain? All of the documentation on W2K active directory migration discusses upgrading the PDC to W2K as the first step. For compatibility reasons, this is not an option for us, unfortunately.

How can we accomplish this?

It is very possible to do this (backup first!!!). You will get the same result if:
You add a BDC or use one of the existing BDC's. Synchronize the domain. Physically remove a BDC (or the newly created BDC). Upgrade the PDC and it WILL retain all of your settings. If something goes wrong, remove the W2K DC from the domain and upgrade one of the BDC's or "re-introduce" the newly created BDC into the domain and promote to PDC. You will get an error stating that the PDC is unavailable, justagree to it and your domain is back to the way it used to be. Keep in mind that the newly upgraded PDC will act as a PDC emulator for the WinNT domain. Meaning that the W2K domain (in mixed mode )will be able to update the WinNT BDC's with no problem. (I must have alot of faith in MS!) If this is not really an option for you, consider a pristine W2K environment and start reading up on ADMT. A pristine environment seems to be alot more work, but you get to test everything before you go productiom. My advice:
Go with the upgrade. (Alot less headaches). At any rate good luck!

Did you ever get this to work?

I need to migrate and retain the NT PDC also. Were you able to accomplish this? Was it straight forward? Any problems?

Thanks in advance
