NT Workstation Security

By spensys ·
My workstations are not asking for the NT Server domain. As a result, even though I change the security level of a user on the server, I can't get the workstation to allow me to load new software. How do I change the local security level.

1. Check the naming of the workstations in Control Panel - network.
They should all be _member_ of the NT Server domain. This means they are also visible in the Server Manager tool on the Domain Controllers.
2. Now, when logging on, the domain name should be one of the options to choose from in the 'logon to' box (next to the workstation name).
3. If you've got these two things up and running, one more caveat: during a normal install (which might have gone wrong in your case), the domain groups have been made member of local SAM groups. E.g. Domain Administrators of the server is part of Administrators on the local SAM. Doublecheck that this is accomplished for those groups which must load new software.

Hope this helps,

In NT you can log onto a workstation as a Domain administrator or a local machine administrator. To change any of the user rights on the local machine you can logon as either. You then use user manager for domains. As it is a workstation it will only allow you to administer the user accounts for the local machine (unless you have installed the resourse kit). You can make changes there.
