NT4 servers don't list names in XP pro

By khenkell ·
Hi,

We are starting to add XP Pro workstations to a Windows NT4 based domain. The main problem we found so far is that all of the other machines are listed in the My Network Places by their comments instead of their actual NetBIOS names. It does append the NetBIOS name to the end in the form below:

For the machine:
Network I Server1
Comment: Main file and print server number 1

The machine is listed in the neighborhood as "Main file and print server number 1 (server1)"

This is confusing the heck out of the users.

Any ideas on how to turn this XP "feature" off?

Thanks in advance

Well, you can drag-n-drop the column headers around. So, you could tell you users to left-click on the Name column header, hold the button down, then drag it until it is over the Comments column header. At that point, let go of the mouse button.
Presto! The Name column is now the first thing in the My Network Places window.

Hope that helps.

That is how I would expect it to work. However, for some reason in XP on a Windows NT4 (or 2000 server too) based network, the Name field actually displays the "familiar" name (othewise known as the comment) instead of the acutal name. So in the details field I have the Name column first, but it isn't actually displaying the names.
