Occasional Email Delivery Delay

By joshhansen ·
Server = Exchange server 2003 SP1, Client = Outlook 2003 sp1.
I have 1 user that has had this strange problem a couple times now. Last Monday (April 25) when she opened her Outlook client, there were messages she hadn?t seen in there before which were actually received by the email server (10 days before) on April 16 (some internal, some external). I did message tracking and the email server did receive the messages addressed to her on the 16th and it said it delivered them to her inbox at that time. The only problem is that she didn?t see them until the 25th (10 days later). The problem happened again today (May 2) ? she had new messages in her inbox that were actually received by the exchange server and supposedly delivered to her inbox on April 22 and 23 (about 10 days prior). She does receive email on a daly basis (internal and external). Any ideas?

It sounds like the .ost file may be corrupt. This is used for Cached Mode in Outlook. Close Outlook and then you can rename it to .old - You can do an expanded search for *.ost to find the file or go to: C:\Documents and Settings\%usrename%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook - Make sure hidden files and folders are showing.

When Outlook is re-opened, it will re-synchronize all files and folders and create a new .ost file.

Hope that helps!

User is not using cache mode - a great idea though.

I believe the previous answer is probably correct. An alternative would be to turn of cached mode and see if that solves the problem permanently. To do this, in Outlook go to Tools/Email Accounts, click Next to change the properties of the current account, click Change to edit the account settings, click the "More settings" button, click the Advanced tab and then de-select the "Use Cached Exchange mode" check box.

Hope this helps!

Taking it out of cached mode will fix all in my experience, mind that you must filter junk email with a 3rd party add-in if you are not running in Cached Mode.

I choose not to accept it, but until Microsoft addresses it I guess we'll have to live with it.

Hmmm, strange one,
I have to admit that I have never seen the message tracking centre lie about when Exchange delivered a message.
Is this just happening to one user? if so - the following is one thing that have seen before:
1. The user has been playing with the view settings in their mailbox, so that new messages do not show.

You could also backup her mail off to a pst using ExMerge and then recreate her mailbox to see if that cures it.

I have to be honest that normally these sort of problems are normally user related from my experience.
