OE outbox not clearing sent messages

By ozi Eagle ·
I've got a problem with Outlook Express.
Win 98SE, initially OE6, removed and reloaded OE5.
Problem that recipients complained that messages were being sent many times. Found that message stays in outbox and when SEND/RECEIVE happens sends them again.
Inadvertently upgraded OE6 to SP2, no access to the internet, hence revert to previous installation (OE5). Still the same problem.
Found that INBOX, SENT and DELETED boxes were huge ~ 200Mb. Renamed all to xxold and created new ones. Problem went away and I assumed this was answer.
Now has started again after a short time.
MS knowledge base says the lack of HDD space will cause this, but there is Gigabytes of free space, so unlikely culprit.
Any ideas before I go on site?

You could try deleting your Deleted Items.dbx and your Sent Items.dbx files. I had a similar problem with emails being sent repeatedly and that fixed it.
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, this is basically what I did, initially, by renaming the folders. I didn't delete them because they might hold important emails (not my machine).

yes, you fixed it on your own, that was good. sounds like it corrupted again. if you don't want to delete it, you can try to repair it by exporting all your inbox contents then deleting the inbox again then recreating it by importing the file you exported. you should be able to figure it out from reading the screen. Inport and export are in the File menu in OE.
next you need to figure out why this is happening. i would run spyware remover on my system from i would also go back to oe6

Hi Sarge,
Thanks for your reply, this is what I did last time, ran latest Ad-Aware, Norton anti virus. Of course a new infection may have occurred.
