Is it necessary to use SP-1a for Office 2000 on XP? How about SP3?

As best I recall, it's not necessary. Been several years since I installed Office 2000 on XP (still using it). Didn't have to install any service packs for it to function. However, I do recommend you install all service packs. There are some updates that plug security holes.

Outlook has some "hanging" issues without sp3 when using xp. When you try to close the the app, it may hang on some machines. I've never found anything in common with the machines where this activity is noted, but I do know that the service pack will solve this issue.
