Office 2000 Sevice Packs 1 & 1a

I recently did a lateral move from sales to CTO (glorified techie) of a small financial services firm due to a company restructuring (downsizing).
I recently began upgrading an old legacy system from Office 97 to Office 2000, operating on Windows 98 SE. Office 2000 was working fine until downloading and installing the SP1 and SP1a. Now Office 2000 (every application contained therein, opens for a few seconds, then closes. I am perplexed. One day soon I am going to Redmond, WA to pay back Microsoft for all the angst I have since the days of Win 3.1.1! Any solutions (to the Office 2000 problem)?
