Office 2003 changes to Office 2000 docs

I ran into a problem a while back for which I found a patch, which I’ve now lost the link to. I opened a document previously created in Word 2000 with Word 2003. Upon closing I was prompted with a question asking if I would like to save to the new format(?). Something along those lines. Is this something that’s been fixed in subsequent Office Updates?
