When MS Word opens it chooses by default the template which also appears as Blank page in :Start/New Office Document.
I believe that you must first save your letterherad as a template (.dot file extension)Then close Word and through Windows Explorer/C:/Program files/Microsoft Office OR Start/Search/All Files and Folders
-locate the file called rather than deleting this file I would suggest you rename it for now keeping the .dot extension. next locate your file and rename it In theory this should now open to your saved letterhead everytime for you to use and to save as a .doc file in MY Documents or wherever your PC has set up to save your user data files. This is worth a shot but consider that Microsoft Office versions later than 2000 is just as possesive as Windows XP OS and does tend to object to any changes to its original status.

Another suggestion would be to investigate creating a rule (macro or keyboard shortcut) for opening Word directly to your letterhead file as a document that you use and save each time with the 'save' as option in the file menu
To do this open Word and go to Tools/Macro/create new...
The help files are quite good in Microsoft Office applications and the wizard in later versions are very user friendly so creating you personalised setting is very acheivable.
I hope that my advise has opened some possible solutions to your question. Cheers Sherril
