Office XP

By jeff_horner ·
I installed Office XP Pro, on new Dell XPS system. For several months I had no issues. I shut down the PC for two vacation. When the PC was restarted, I have been unable to open any office file. I receive an error "file *the file name* is unavailable". I reinstalled Office XP Pro several times, with same results. I also installed Office 2000 with no issues. I also reinstalled Windows XP Pro. I have tried to install service packs 1, 2 and 3, with 2 and 3 reporting "wrong version". What are my options if any?

Yes, I can create a file, save, close, and reopen the same file. I still receive the same error.

SP2 updates both Office XP and standalone copies of Outlook 2002 or other Office applications. You have several choices for installing it:

Allow the Microsoft Office Product Updates Detection Engine to check your system and determine whether you need SP2 or both SP1 and SP2. This method may be the fastest for many people, because if it detects that you already have Windows Installer 2.0 installed, the SP2 download is only 6mb.

Download SP2 (15.5mb) and run the file after you download it. If you get a message that the wrong version of the product was detected, try using Product Updates as described above.
