My question concerns a strange problem one of my customers is having with MSOffice-XP Pro & Win98SE. She can’t edit, change or create documents in Word, Excel, Access or Powerpoint. You can view documents with no problem but as soon as you try to do any editing you get the following message: “This command is not available because the document is locked for edit”. This happens with ALL documents, spreadsheets and databases. Also, new documents cannot be opened – under the ‘File’ menu the ‘New’ option is totally missing. I looked for the ‘Unlock’ command and it’s also missing. The customer says this all started after she accidentally clicked a link on a page that had some arabic symbols. She said it launched a bunch of XXX pop-upsand eventually hung her system. After she rebooted, the ‘locked documents’ problem showed up. Her system has NAV2002 with all updates and she runs a hardware firewall so it’s doubtful that a virus did the damage. I had her uninstall then reinstall OfficeXP but that didn’t help. She spoke to Microsoft afterward (to re-activate Office) and they couldn’t help her (she’s extremely computer illiterate). I finally unloaded OfficeXP and reloaded Office 97 and it works fine. None of the other systems in her workgroup has any problem editing documents in OfficeXP. I deleted all *.tmp files and ~*.do? and ~*.wbk files. Emptied the recycle bin, ran a thorough scandisk, deleted all files from the Windows temp folder and the Office10 folder under Program Files and ran a full system virus scan. There has to be a registry key that can be deleted or changed to solve this for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated – this lady is about to go ballistic.
