Offline files and broken HDD

By timo.mammela ·
I have a laptop with somewhat broken HDD. I can access the hdd and move files from the disk but I'm not able to start up win xp from the disk. I have about 100 offline files that I would need to recover. Is there any way to recover the files since they are stored as somekind of system files on the laptop HDD.

Being responsible

by w2ktechman In reply to Offline files and broken ...

It is better to send this into a shop or have your local deskside support take care of it. I say this because of many recent attempts to try to obtain information illegally more recently on this site. There are ways of recovering data, and many of us know how to, but would hate for this information to fall into foolish hands.

Sorry, no real help here

being plain stupid...

by timo.mammela In reply to Being responsible

you have just posted an illegal accusation to public site that I am trying to recover information for illegal purposis. I hope you understand what that means. I need the information to save about 1,5 weeks of work time to rewrite the information. All the IT support peole that I have talked to hava not been able to help me. So I decide to turn to someones, I thought were professionals. Seems that there are at least few plain stupid people here or just people who have the information, for some, who knows what purposis, and are not willing to share this.

Encrypted files?

by Toivo Talikka In reply to Offline files and broken ...

Here is a link to Microsoft's description of the protection and recovery of offline files:

You may have difficulty in recovering the files if you cannot login into the laptop. Hopefully this situation has been considered in your IT procedures (DRP) of your company so that a copy of the encryption keys can be made available to you in this situation.

Microsoft Utility

by Toivo Talikka In reply to Offline files and broken ...

You may need to get version 1.1 of the csscmd utility directly from Microsoft to move the folder from the broken HD

Here is link to a blog about fixing similar problems with this utility:

UBCD

Use this. You can access your files and use the software it includes to burn them to your laptop's CDRW, if you have one. If not, you can connect it to a network and transfer the files over. It uses its own OS and software so as long as it sees your files, you have many options using CD burning software, the Internet, etc. to retrieve them.
