Old Exchange Server Won't Go Away

By ryan.dunford ·
I recently had our only mail server (Exchange 2003) crash. The old HHD was unrecoverable so we loaded a new server up. The new load is Win2k Advanced Server (AD) and Exch 2003. It was loaded once (I wasn't present for this process so I don't know the details) and didn't work, so they did a complete format and reload in which they changed the server name. The problem is, when I go to create new accounts, I still have the option of using the Exch server by the first name. Confusing, I know. Wrap-up: Exchange was loaded twice on the same box, old server name still shows up as a choice when creating new accounts. How do I get rid of the old server. Oh yeah, and I've already tried the metadata cleanup using NTDS. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Go to AD Sites and Services, locate the old server name under the server directory of the site and select the NTDS settings under that server. Delete the NTDS settings selecting the option where the server can not be recovered. Delete the server from the directory. Locate the new server name and if it is not there then you can manually add it.
