Open Word docs-but only from withinWord!

By brifd1 ·

I used to be able to open a Word document from anywhere, e.g. from within Explorer double-clicking. Now when I do what I just noted, I get the word menus, but no document...and no, it's not hidden (I'm not even sure you can do that-I'm thinking of Excel, where I often do this). I end up having to: (1) open Word; and then (2) File\Open or click on the folder to get the Open dialog box.
What happened here???

Check your registry.
Open regedit and navigate to the key:

It should look like this:
"E:\MSOffice\Office10\WINWORD.EXE" /n /dde

[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]

should be:

(Default) '"':\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE" "%1'"'

I have a "dd eexec" folder under shell\Print and shell\Printto

"[REM_DDE_Minimize][FileOpen("%1")][t=lsDocumentDirty()][FilePrint 0][SetDocumentDirty t][DocClose]"

"[REM_DDE_Minimize][FileOpen("%1")][FilePrintSetup "%2 on p",.DoNotSetAsSysDefault=1][FilePrint 0][DocClose 2][FilePrintSetup '"']"
