opening attachments with saving them

By wongt005 ·
My organization send and receive a lot of .exe files. Recently we upgraded to Office XP and Outlook wouldn't open anymore. I edited the registry to "unlock" those attachments but now Outlook asks me to save them before opening them. Is there a way to open those .exe files without saving them first?

.exe is a file compression that windows can automatically execute,(unlike the .zip file where you need Winzip). So most of the time or maybe all the time you need to download and save it first before opening. Anyway there is no harm, unless it is accompanied by a virus, so have a virus check first.

mm... perhaps I didn't explain it good enough. My problem is that I was using Outlook 2000, it would give me the option to Open it / Save it when I double click on the attached .exe file. Now that I upgraded to Outlook 2002, it doesn't give me this option anymore. Instead Outlook 2002 makes me go one extra step by having me save the .exe file and then open it by double clicking it from My Document or wherever I save the file.

You'll need to alter the Administrative Security features. You can only override this setting if you are running Exchange. All the details are at: http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/four/outg03.htm

As always, remove any spaces in the URL, or here's a tiny one: http://tinyurl.com/3mid
