Opening Microsoft Excel documents problem

By supernecro ·
Good day

We are having a problem with Excel. When we send Excel files to people via email they can't open them. The computer states that the file is a ".dat" file and cannot be opened.
What can this be? When the people send the files to me on my Mac then I can open it, but when it is sent to other people also working on Macs and some on PC then they can't open the files. On the Macs we have Office 2008 and on the PC's we have Office 2007.
Please help me. :-{

... when they receive the file, what is the file extension? Sounds as if either an Anti-Virus program or a Firewall is either changing the file extension or blocking the attachment altogether.

Opening Microsoft Excel documents problem

Make sure that u set the default Mail Format in Outlook (if u r using that?) in all computers to either HTML or Rich Text and then let them send attachments to each other. Normally this may happen if the formats are not matching. Let us know the status after this changes, if any done.

Before you send the Excel files make sure they are in XML format. Hope this works for you.

I have seen some email programs add the .dat extension to the end of a file. Usually it is a file w/out and extension, but I am sure this is what is happening. Just have the user save the attachment and either rename the file to .xls or have them right click and open with, then choose excel.
