Opening Windows Explorer with certain criteria

By Elsykay ·
Hi all~ I open Explorer by right clicking on the Start button and selecting Explore. Explorer opens with several files expanded and it opens up at the Start Menu folder. I would like it to open up at the root of C with only the C folder expanded, no other files expanded.

Any ideas on how to accomplish this from where I access Explorer? The other options I have seen here don't change Explorer from where I access it.

open win explorer at C in Vista

by pedro52 In reply to Opening Windows Explorer ...

Hi, to open at C drive, create a shortcut on desktop to Explorer, quickest way is Start button, find Explorer, then right click and drag to desktop, selecting "create shortcut here".
Right click the icon and go to Properties. In the Target window you will see text similar to below, just add the text after the exe command.

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,C

I run Vista and this command worked in XP as well. This is one of the first things I did when I got the PC home.

But you don't want to do that from the Start Button

It opens there for a reason.

Otherwise, see the previous post.

edit - just to clarify: I mean only right-clicking on the Start Button specifically.

Go ahead and change or make any other shortcuts.

Drag the drive icon into the Quick Launch bar if you like.

It's a pain.

I too would like to change it so every place Explorer is opened from opens it in the same view, with the Folder tree displayed and sitting in My Documents.

My advice - ditch Windows Explorer altogether ! ...

Install and use 2xExplorer instead.

It's so much better and more powerful, you won't give a toss WHERE it opens or what it's showing when it does! :)
