Optical Drives

By nhiep_nguyen ·

I got a problem with my CD/DVD drives on my desktop computer and would appreciate any help you could provide me with.
My XP SP3 computer was working fine with two CD/DVD drives, one Sony and one Plextor.
Following a graphic card failure I have to install another (an old one : nVidia GeForce4 TI 4600) I've also downloaded its latest driver from nVidia (2006).
The problem is my two drives now only recognize CD discs but no DVD discs!
What could be the problems and what can I do?
Thank you in advance.

Well as you have the newest Drivers you could try

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Optical Drives

Removing the NVidia Drivers from the system and then restart. Allow the system to restart and install the default Video Drivers and now see if the Optical Drives will read a Manufactured DVD.

If they will not you have a problem that is more likely related to Hardware Failures than to a problem with a Video Card failure and replacement Drivers though you still should uninstall the Old Video Card Software.

Now do you leave DVD's in these drives all the time? If you do it is possible that the Laser that generates the Light Beams to read DVD's has failed the DVD & CD use different Wave Length Lasers so one can work correctly while the other media Type remain unrecognized.

If you are not getting any error messages and the DVD Drives just site there attempting to read the Disc's or they just accept them and then the LED on the front of the drive goes out it very well could be the DVD Laser has failed completely and the drives need replacing.

Lasers beam

by nhiep_nguyen In reply to Well as you have the newe ...

Thank you for your suggestions but I wonder how possibly, in case there are different lasers for DVD and CD, or circuitries or whatever, how possibly that DVD lasers of both drives fail at the same time while CD lasers remain? Is it pressing a little bit hard on luck?
Anyway following your suggestion I'll take another DVD/CD drive from another computer to install and test.

It's not at all unlikely

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Lasers beam

You have 2 Devices subject to the same Environment and similar loads with the same Spikes on the Mains Line it would be unusual for the weakest link not to fail. Remember that what generates those Laser's is nothing more than a Focused LED.

While Light Emitting Diodes are reliable they do still fail and computers do suck dust & other muck in through the Openings of the Optical Drives at the same rate. If anything it would be unlikely that they wouldn't fail together.

You could try Booting

by Jacky Howe In reply to Optical Drives

from a Bootable DVD. If it works it is a software problem that may be fixed with a firmware update for the DVD drives. It wouldn't hurt to update the Chipset drivers as well.
