Oracle database query & reporting tool

By yvan.rousseau ·
I'm looking for a software to replace Computer Associates/Sterling Software VISION:Explorer 8.1 that make queries (presented in a spreadsheet style) & simple reports on Oracle databases (through ODBC or not). If possible, I would like to make some copy+paste from one table to another (of course, with identical structures). It could be done either in the same session and connected in 2 different databases or with another copy of the application with both connected in different databases. Do you know anything like that that doesn't cost more than 500$US per user?

We already use Crystal Reports for COMPLEX reports (prepared by our programmers). Simple reports can't be made by "average" users with this tool. I'm looking for a SIMPLE tool to make QUERIES & REPORTS easily (without any strong knowledge of SQL).

Try Oracle Discoverer . It comes now with 8i and up. Once you set it up, users can set up there own reports with no knowledge of sql and export the results into Excel. As for the copy and paste functions, I'd just use the import/export utilities or a a product called PDQOUT. I think it's at

Sorry, I tried to install & run Discoverer but it seems that it requires an Oracle Applications installed. What I was looking for is a query tool for Oracle databases only (Enterprise or standard edition). We run it on Unix servers like Solaris, HP-UX, True64, AIX, etc.

We have Discoverer up and running without an App server. Now if you want it to be browser based , then yes you do need an app server.

Check the documentation section at http://otn.oracle.com . The installation manual will walk you right through it.

All the install does is create End User Layer (EUL) objects under the install schema. We have a user named Discover who owns and does the admin for it. You do have to have the discoverer client installed on the user's pc's, but it works well. Good Luck

Oracle Discoverer is a more Business Intelligence/Analytic Solutions for managers & executives. For reporting, my solution is now the free Query Reporter from Allround Automations. I'm still looking for a query tool that a user with limited knowledge of SQL. It should have a simple interface to add conditions (joint, grouping, etc.) & sort order and permit copy/paste of data between tables, without using an "export to Excel" (or other software) option.
