OS BASHING DOMINATES TR DISCUSSIONS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WEEK

For the first time since we started tracking such data, the same
discussions held the top spot in both our polls for two weeks straight.
The WHY DO IT PEOPLE REALLY BASH WINDOWS? thread is approaching 600
posts, which is rarified air for an on-topic thread. The Linux vs.
Windows crossfire has been unrelenting over the last two weeks,
spawning sub-threads and related discussions at a record pace. Smart
money says the announcement of Windows Vista has played a role in the
flare-up.

Meanwhile, the ANWR-centered HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT!! thread has got
everyone's off-topic hackles up. Religion and politics have again
reared their ugly heads in the too-hot lists, with a surprising amount
of hostility, even by TechRepublic standards. Steer clear if you aren't
ready for a full-on flame war.

Technical Q&A, as always, remains a bastion of sanity, with good
old-fashioned DNS malfunctions leading up the list of help requests.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: HAL 9000

No, that's not Sauron's all-seeing eye peering back at you, but the
closely cropped visage of HAL 9000, recently anointed head of
TechRepublic's Top 100 and "Alleged Boss and Official Scape Goat" of a
small tech consultancy Down Under. HAL also has a certain affinity for
classic cars and confounding Microsoft sales reps, to say nothing of an
active role in off-topic TR discussion threads. Check him out.

TAG, YOU'RE IT: WINDOWS

Windows is a hot topic, so for the sake of timeliness, we're going to
once again tout the windows tag, which shows off blogs, discussion
threads, members, and links concerning Microsoft's flagship product.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

LOCAL AREA NETWORK CONNECTION ISSUE
Member TREK05 is dealing with a DNS doozy: "The DNS server is setup on
a Windows 2000 Server machine. The network card went bad a couple weeks
ago, so I had it replaced with a Netgear PCI 10/100 card. I've been
noticing that after x amount of time (around 5-8 hours) the server
stops responding to incoming and outgoing connection requests. All
pings to the server are timed out, and the activity monitor for the
network connection shows no activity (even though it is still enabled).
When I disabled and reenabled the connection, everything started
working again, web browsing, etc. Any ideas on what the problem could
be?"

WHY DO IT PEOPLE REALLY BASH WINDOWS?
New week, same topic. Here's the rerun description: Speaking of the
Windows-versus-Linux blood feud, member ANGUS MCLAREN found a new brand

hate Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS or any other operating system is
not a true techie or network guru. You don't ever bash the OS; in fact,
if the OS crashes, then it's your fault, not the OS." Four-hundred
