OS installation

By jgt63 ·
Because I need a Netware client and am currently using XP Home Edition, I am switching over to Pro. Can I install XP Pro directly over Home Edition and still retain all of my files? Will I have to reset all of my networking settings that I am now using? Is there any other way with Home Edition to install a Microsoft Client for Netware Networks?

As for using XP Home with Novell client - I would strongly recommend against it, home is just not built for this type of a robust network client.

Always back up your files before any type of an upgrade, as it's all too easy for something to **** up and lose everything. As well remember to grab your .pst file, favorites and address book for a good backup as well!

If you have too much data for a CD or DVD burner to get, beg/borrow or buy a 2nd HDD - pop it in and copy your data over too it - then pop it back out for your re-install.

Now, after you've done this ; ) I would recommend installing overtop of your XP Home install rather than trying to upgrade. My experience is that this is messy and normally carries side effects that are annoying at best and crippling at worst.

As long as you don't choose to reformat during the install (or format to NTFS) you will have to reinstall all your software applications and settings (including your network settings) - but your data in all non-windows directories will still be there waiting for you when you're done!

Yes it's a little painful and inconvenient up front, but you'll be savings yourself a lot of grief in the long run.
