Out of Office Assistant alternative

We decided not to migrate from Exchange 5.5 to 2000 and are using Web-based Internet mail for our messaging instead. The feature of Exchange that is most missed by users is the Out of Office Assistant. I’d like to find an alternative that would produce the same result – could it be done with a Rule (details please)? If not, any other ideas?
