outbound mail failure from <>

By mike ·
As administrator I am receiving 30 or 40 outbound mail failures each day that are obviously spam from user <>, and less frequently from spoofed user names. Specific message is this: Notification: Outbound Mail Failure - Message timed out.

Does anyone know how I can prevent this? I fear I am the victem of a spammer. We are running MS Exchange 5.5 sp 2 on NT4.0 sp 6a.

You may want to scan your machines for viruses, adware and spyware with up-to-date software
Ad-Aware, Spybot, and MS Anti-spyware for adware/spyware
And i recommend CA eTrust AV for anti-virus, I have seen it find viruses that Norton, McAfee and AVG not find.

Until a few months ago I was administering an Exchange 5.5 system on Windows NT server, and saw those messages regularly and just deleted them. They were triggered by incoming messages from the net.

You could front end Exchange with a mail proxy which validates the mail domain of the sender before accepting the message. For example Fedora Core 4 with Sendmail and SpamAssassin.

Yes, these are relays.Your server is is set to not relay so these come in but are not allowed to go out. I get the same. I don't think you can really stop these. You may stiffen your security such as SPA etc. but you may end up stopping some valid emails.
