Outlook 97 won't check for new messages

By The Gun Doctor ·
I an running Outlook 97 on Win 98 SE. I have a 56k dialup connection to my ISP. While I'm on the net I expect Outlook to check for new mail every X minutes. In the Options dialog box under the Internet E-mail tab I have the box checked and I've set the interval to 10 mins...But it won't check for new mail unless I do it manually. Any ideas?

When Outlook was installed, was it set up for Internet Mail only or corporate use? I had the same problem when Outlook was set up for corporate/workgroup use (Exchange Server support). Set Outlook for Internet mail only, worked fine.

It's now been reinstalled to ensure that it is set up for Internet mail only...still doesn't check at the prescribed interval...

Once you configure outlook to check for new mail every x min, you must hit the F5 key to activate this setting immediately. If not, it can go to the previous setting, or if you are using it for the first time, will default to 15 min. If you are timing it, it can really throw you off the first time.

I noticed that you manually checked it. Did you time it to see if it worked after checking it manually ?
