Outlook blocks access to folder files

By shanna ·
Hi everyone,

We're running a PC with Windows XP Pro and Outlook 2002, and it's access to an Excel 97 file contained within an Exchange 5.5-based Public Folder is being blocked. The security feature says the file is considered unsafe and is therefore not accessible.

The staff member using the PC is quite sure they've installed the latest email security update, and I'm wondering if there's any way to either roll the update back or configure Outlook to allow access to this file?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, you want to make sure that your security settings for both Outlook and Excel are set to "Medium" or "Low" on macro security. The setting is probably "High" on one program or the other (or both), which is probably what is blocking thatfile from being opened. If that doesn't work, post again, because there is a way to more granularly control security from an administrative end, but the setup can be a bit complex. Hope this helps!

This is by design in Outlook 2002. If you are not afraid of the registry, MS explains how to enable access at

(There should be no spaces in this link)

Good luck!
