Outlook Closes after 10 seconds

By sescobar ·
Help, please. I have a computer in our office that was recently infected with a lot of spyware and a virus. I've run Symantec virus scanner and everything comes out clean now. However, for some reason Outlook will not stay open - all of the other Office 2000 programs are fine.

When I log in under SAFE mode, Outlook does stay open. This computer is running on XP Operating System. Any suggestions? I've already downloaded critical updates and installed latest updates for the 2000 Suite. Please help if you can.

Thanks.

Unless you have business critical data on that system, my advice is to "nuke and pave." Format the hard disk and reinstall the software. You will waste less time.

You may be virus free but not malware free. Have you installed, updated, and run Ad-Aware and Spybot? If not, do so.

Also might want to give Stinger a try. Link below.

To expand a little on the other posts. Yes, I would run AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy. They will find harmful programs and settings in your computer that are not considered viruses (so virus scanners will not pick them up). Here are a couple of links to the downloads (both are free):

AdAware SE
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Download and install both. Follow the directions in each to update their definition files and run each of them.

If you still have the same problem, before I would completely wipe the machine try reinstalling the Office package (or just Outlook if you want to try that first). It's better than a complete reinstall if you don't need one.

Cheers.

i would check out mskb at support.microsoft.com to see if the great articles on tshooting outlook startup would help without reinstalling. even tho i do agree is often most efficient time wise maybe. but oh so repugnant. since you have got a hold of it sounds like. everything works but outlook and outlook profiles and mailbox is known for fragility. and you have pounded box enuf to break it maybe. you even report it works in safe mode. how much can be wrong? most likely corrupt outlook profile, i say. or mailbox. i would look up switches for tshooting outlook startup problems like yours support.microsoft.com to pinpoint it and point me to repairs. or just logoff and back on as administrator or another profile and try outlook. new windows profile, new outlook profile...
bet that is faster than reinstalling...
other thing you could try to shotgun it with latest office sp. maybe get a repair out of it....i like to have boxes working great pre-update but have been known to 'repair' a box that way...
