Outlook Express Error : not enough memory

By fraggle ·
When trying to write a new mail message, when you click the 'new mail' button in top left of outlook, the error message:
'There was an error opening this message.

There is not enough memory'

appears. Running 2000 Server, C: is on a 4GB partition, but there's 21Mb free and there's 512Mb RAM.

Without digging through the MS knowledgebase, I'd say you probably have something running in the tray or some spyware taking up your resources.

first of all, download and run AdAware:,

secondly make sure you don't hae a bunch of stuff running in the system tray (beside the clock) shut down anything you don't need such as CD burner software, WinAmp agent etc.

Lastly (if you still have problems) press Ctrl+Alt+Del once and it will open the task manager check you don't have any unknown running processes (the path to the file is shown beside the acronym).

How many messages and folders in your inbox?

You may just have so many messages that you are using up your system resources when you open OE.

Next, which version of OE?

If version 6, which video card?
And, have you tried updating the video driver?

If OE 6, and the video driver is more than 2 years old, you may have a compatibility problem.

21MB of free hard drive is NOT much for Windows, unless the page file is on a separate drive.

Even with 512MB of RAM, you need a minimum of 500MB free hard drive space for the page file.
Personally, I would prefer to have 1GB or more available..

The more I think about this, your problem is that you are running out of resources.
You need to purge your inbox and message folders.
Then, clean up the C: drive to create more free space.
