Outlook Express Hangup

On occasion when I close Outlook Express I get the message “Compacting deleted items”, and my machine hangs up. The disk drive runs like crazy. If I leave alone it for an hour or more it eventually recovers. If I try to terminate the activity it takes five minutes to get a response from any keystroke. I don’t have that much E-mail. Any clues why the hang up?
