Outlook express memory error msg?

By pbtoms ·
I have a user in a branch office who emailed me that she is getting the following error in Outlook Express:
There was an error opening this message.
There is not enough memory.

This message appears when she tries to create a new email message. The machine has 96 Meg of RAM, 300+ MB free on the hard drive. Running Win98, and IE 5.5. We tried re-installing IE, and that seemed to fix it, but the next day she told me it was happening again. If she reboots, she can usually get it to let her send one or two emails, but not always.
She is not getting other memory errors in other programs.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would take control of the windows swap file and set it for a fixed minimum amount of 150mb with 250mb max and this should hlp that. Also defrag the HD if you haven't yet.

Control panel, system, performance tab then click on virtual memory to change those settings

Unless your prepared to install a larger harddrive in order to give windows all the room that it is wanting in virtual memory management then it is time to do a bit of housekeeping on the unit.

There are a few areas that can be looked at that individually, and incrementally will help in correcting the problem.

Defrag - getting all the pieces back in order and in contiguous groupings, which in turn gives the swap file a better working environment. This action cannot be emphasized enough ona w98 system.

Scandisk - errors can be masked by a drive that is having a underlying temporary problems and a good thorough scan can contribute to positive workings.

System Resourses - Use the resource meter (start-programs-accessories-system tools-resource meter- as a gauge as to how much of the resources are being utilized upon startup and which programs opened are causing the biggest drag. Often a program that is opened for "convenience" but not actually used as the primary work activity can have a significant impact by reserving resources (memory) that could be better served by opening through desktop icon as needed. Microsoft office easily comes to mind since it tends to open all products when say just Word is needed. Reducingstartup clutter does stablize a machine overall.

(concluding above)

Control of Swap file size, as suggested by hingrman, this could be a temporary solution. Temporary since as the disks continues to fill the cramped quarter will reoccur.

Clean out the files and clean out the mail boxes. This is just a continuing struggle between, machine, user, admins. But there does come a time. Archiving offline often satisfys the user who must save everything.

Temporary internet Files - this area can be a real sleeper in gobbling space. Also youshould check to see how much space - IE-Tools-Options-Settings - is being held here - while it improves cached performance it does detract if no cleared often enough or is holding too much.

Now once all those things are done and if there are continuances then other issues of degraded memory chips and or network connection issue could be looked at, if need be.

Hope that helped.
