Outlook express not loading address book

By grossclout ·
When starting Outlook Express 5.0 or 5.1 or 5.5 (beta) I receive the following message "The address book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured, please reinstall." The program then comes up and I can receive mail and read it in the lower window, but I cannot view messages saved elsewhere (in eml format) nor can I reply to messages or send messages. I have reinstalled and still get the same message. I have tried Microsoft's "support" without success. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thank you.

It sounds like you're having more than just Address Book problems with Outlook Express but if you happen to have a backup of your address book you can try deleting your current one and then go in under your Address Book and click File->Import->Address Book and reload it, maybe that will help the address book problem.

Dear Wizard,
OE does that. If the addy book is corrupt, OE will not permit any send functions whatsoever. It also does not permit viewing of eml files, because drafts can be saved in this format. I guess the logic there was that if the eml tried to link into a corrupted addy book, an IPF/GPF/IllegalOp may occur.
I have seen both OE4 and OE5 behave in this manner. To verify that OE is looking in the right place for the address book, run regedit and search for the value "store root". Once the directory for storing the address book has been determined, go there and make sure that a .wab file is there. If not, download a .wab file from a concerned friend and put it in the storage directory.

Thereafter, good luck.

Hope this helps.
