Outlook Express problems

using Windows ME, and Outlook Express.
When opening received attachments, the all open as a Power Point presentation,(unless the are received specificly as ms word or other specific application) instead of as a text message. This has just started happening within the last couple of weeks. This makes it impossible to open and read a text message. I dont understand why this changed nor how to correct it
