Outlook hangs when doing a reply

By edudley ·
I have Office 2003 sp1 and using Outlook. When I try to do a reply I get a display box that Outlook is opening word but then it hangs. I have done a repair but that didnt help. Sometimes a reboot will help. I have Winxp sp1.
Could not find anything on Technet.
Thanks
Edie

If you use word as your email editor this is likely due to corruption in the default Word template (Normal.dot). A repair of Office does not fix your normal template.

To resolve this rename normal.dot to normal.old and restart Word. Word will make a new uncorrupted template.

normal.dot can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. The application data folder by default is hidden so you need to make sure your computer is set to show hidden files and folders.

To enable the viewing of hiden files and folders:

1.) Open My Computer
2.) Go to Tools => Folder Options and then the view tab.
3.) Select the radio button to show hidden files and folders.

also...

4.) Uncheck the box to hide the file extension of known file types. This will allow you to rename the file in the way I mentioned.
