Outlook issue

By cliff680 ·
I am having a problem at one of my clients that is really strange. I am running Exchange 2003 and a couple of the workstations have Outlook 2000. Inside Outlook 2000 some of the messages say "This item contains active content that can't be displayed in the preview pane. Open item to read it's contents". But when I open the item it says "Can't open this item". This only seems to happen to e-mails that are from listservs and places like that. The problem doesn't happen on Outlook 2003.

I have ripped out Outlook and can't get this to go away. I think it might be related to Exchange 2003.
Any ideas??

Sorry but I don't have an answer for your question but noticed you are mentioning the preview pane.

PREVIEW pane is the worst nightmare for a network, SHUT IT OFF ON AL CLIENTS!!!

If you have a virus sitting in your inbox and delete the email above it, in many cases you are now infected as the message has been opened.

This is a NO NO for a network and will be your headache sooner than later.

Enforce a NO PREVIEW policy NOW.

just open OUTLOOK and select VIEW>LAYOUT
this will open the window where on the lower half you can deselect the 'Show preview pane' option.

As I said, I cannot help you with the issue at hand, but reading your post raised the red flag.

Do youself a favour and kill it, nobody benefits from the preview pane.

Thanx, I already berated the user for having it on. When I tried to turn it off I got as error message when restarting Outlook saying that it wouldn't remember my settings and they would need to be reset later.

This is starting to sound like a rights issue, can I assume you've looked at and if possible rebuilt the user rights?

Yes, I've done that. It works okay in Outlook 2003, just not 2000.

This might sound wrong but is woth a try. How about the MS Office updates, did you download those for the Office 2000 Suite? If not try that.

I tried that, it didn't work. I also tried loading Outlook 2002 and that didn't work either. I wonder if there is an issue with Win '98 conecting to Exchange 2003 and then reading html mail?.?.
