Outlook.exe 2003 hogging CPU at 100%

By Chrisfc ·
Running XP pro on an HP nx8220 laptop. Only recently has this become a problem, randomly during operations (could be the simplest of operations) the CPU just hangs whilst outlook.exe is running at 100%. The performance is better in safe mode (outlook /safe) but still not as it should be. The same user works fine on other PCs

I've tried the following, to no avail.
Removing outlook lookout
Removing activesync

Any ideas welcome. Thanks, Chris.

Is the client downloading the address book and is operating in Cached Mode?

It is running in cached mode; I've tried switching to online mode, unfortunately it makes no difference..

Are all your application running slow? Could be a virus or just a setting issue .

by Chrisfc In reply to

No, just outlook. Have already run a virus scan..

Could similar application like outlook or older version of outlook is also installed. Try removing one by one your other application except microsoft and your present outlook, then try opening your outlook to discover the contadicting application.

You wouldn't happen to have MSN 7 installed on this machine ?
I have seen this type of behaviour with the MSN/Outlook combo.

Have you tried running Perfmon to see exactly what it's doing?

It's not trying to send out thousands of emails to people in your inbox is it?

I know it's probably a silly question to be asking an IT Department Manager, but you'd be amazed at how many people are out there with no active antivirus, or firewall. Especially when it comes to notebooks.

I too would be interested in resolving this one.

I have a similar issue with an HP4010 running XP pro with Office 2003.

When browsing folders under Personal Folders, the processor jumps to 97% activity. This happens when connected to exchange or in offline mode.

Current virus/firewall software is installed and up to date. No spyware detected.

Frankly, i'm at a lose as to what could cause this.

Solved.
Turns out that some OCR software subsequently installed on the laptop slowed outlook to a crawl. Removing it simply did the trick.. good luck though..!
