OWA Same Machine as Exchange or not?

By D.Shepard ·
I am running Windows Server 2000 and Exchange 2000. I have set up OWA as a test and am using it on the same machines as Exchange 2000. I seem to be getting conflicting or no information to the question do I need to be running OQA and Exchange on different servers and why? Can anyone give me the reasons pro and con why the same machine or different. Or point me to a reliable setup guide for OWA.

Thanks

OWA Same Machine as Exchange or not?

It pretty much depends on the number of users you have. If your server isn't getting bogged down, then let it run on the exchange box. OWA is automatically installed with Exchange. All that really is required is firing up IIS and pointing your browser to www.server.com/exchange. Of course IIS opens the door to all kinds of security threats. Personally I'd run OWA on exchange until the user load demands otherwise.

MS knowledgebase and google are great tools, use them.

OWA Same Machine as Exchange or not?

Well, unless you have the Enterprise edition of Exchange 2000, you don't have any choice. The standard version of Exchange 2000 only allows you to run OWA on your Exchange server. The Enterprise edition allows you to set up a "front end/back end" arrangement that will allow OWA to run on a different server. Not having worked w/the Enterprise edition myself, I don't know exactly how this works, but this is what I have been told by MS technical support reps.

I have OWA running at a numberof different client sites on the standard edition with OWA on the same server as Exchange 2000. It can be a little tricky to set up but it works fine when configured properly.

Hope this helps!

At my company we use the enterprise edition.
Beecause of the possible load ( 5000 colleagues and 40.000 students) we decided to use four frontend servers in a load balancing formation.
They all respond to the same URL and ip adress
