Is there a way to remove the pagefile.sys on an NT Workstation which causes a blue screen of death

nope, you can not completely remove the pagefile, you can move it to another partition (if you have, thats the recommended practice)
or you can minimze it to 2MB.

If partition is FAT, make bootable WIN98 foppy disk, add ATTRIB.EXE to floppy disk, boot-up from WIN98 floppy disk, use ATTRIB.EXE c:\pagefile.sys -h -s -r. Then DEL the file.

You can remove the page file from its original location by selecting it and setting its initial and maximum size to 0. You should be aware that you'll be prompted to reboot your system after you make changes to the size or location of the page file.
