Palm III/Nokia 7110 doesn’t work

I have a Palm III and a Nokia 7110. On my Palm I’ve installed AvantGo (browser) and MsgAgent (e-mail). Everytime when I try to sync via the Nokia 7110 (through irDA) the connection is lost after a few seconds. I’ve already upgraded the Nokia 7110 tothe latest firmware but still no positive result. This is a serious problem because I am not able to read my e-mail while I’m somewhere outdoors. Does anybody have a clue and solution?

Ensure the OS on the Palm is 3.3 or above. Ideally you need 3.5. CHheck on the Palm website that your Palm can be updated to this OS as one of the Palm III models cannot.

I already checked this before I posted the question. My Palm III has OS 3.3 so the combination is well configured.

Do you have a data account for your phone? Most phone companies require you to set up a data account before you can use your mobile to access email, web, etc.

I’ve got a data account for my mobile phone. I think the problem is more technical (hardware) than functional (Software, setup etc.).

a few things to verify,
do you see data call on your Nokia ? It can be your data subscription which is not enabled by your provider OR what kind of number are you calling ? severall ISP’s do have a different call-in number special for mobile users.
Here some settings we used to provide with mobile phone’s;
Prefs / Modem
Modem Custom
Speed 57.600
Speaker Low
Flow Automatic
String AT&FX4S36=4\N5

When I get a connection between the Nokia and Palmtop, I can see that after a few seconds a connection is established between the phone and provider (this happens 1 out of 100). I still think it’s a technical problem which has nothing to do with theISP’s I’m using (I tried the same thing with other mobile phones, Nokia 8120 and Motorola Timeport and had almost no problems).

How to setup:

Goto Prefs on the main screen.

Select connection

Edit the connection in use

Select details and enter the init string of AT&F

This will set the conneciton to 19200bps.

Speed 19200

The problem has nothing to do with the configuration of my Palm. I’ve tried the same thing with other phones and had almost no problems(Nokia 8210, Motorola Timeport)when establishing a connection between phone and provider.
