parellel port not working

By fzabin ·
I have recently inherited a Sony PCG F-350 notebook in which the parellel port is not working. The previous owner was informed that motherboard would need to be replaced at a cost of greater than $1,000. So she opted for a new computer instead. The computer was given to me for spare parts because I also have a Sony, but I would like to use it as a backup system.

We both use a program called Case CATalyst by Stenograph (court reporting software) which requires a security device be attachedto the parallel port. Without the parellel port, the program cannot be accessed.

Must the motherboard truly be replaced or is there a way to fix or replace the existing port?

I was looking into purchasing the Quatech SPP-100 (PC card). However, Stenograph has informed me that this product will not work as the software will only check LPT1 to verify that the security device is connected.

If fixing or replacing the existing parallel port is not possible, is it possible to reconfigure the computer to think the PC card port is LPT1?

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions anyone out there might have.
