password duplictated in dial up box

In XP, both home and pro, and W2000 – when the dial up for internet connection comes up, and the save password is checked, the password is double and sometimes triple the length it should be – what gives here? I’m sure it’s something simple I’ve missed in a setup somewhere, but it’s bugging me a lot in several customer’s computers. How do I make it save the dialup password to be just the original size?
