There are some free Linux based password removal software on the internet. What they do is that they overwrite the current password with what you type in. I found that it works best to change the account to no password and then after getting back into XP to re-establish the password.

Since you are using XP, you probably have an NTFS file system, and basically that means that Linux will basically mount it Read Only.

Another possible problem can occur if the admin encrypted password and other files,or even whole directories further with his own username and password.

Why not just phone up the person that quit, I would think that he would be willing to give you the passwords, anything else would be demanding a ransome and holding you hostage.

You want a program called ERD Commander.

It is a bootable program that will allow you to rest the local Admin password. Works great! I have to use it about once a week these days...

My boss has one I think called "Brutus". Symantec thinks it's a virus (because it's a hacking tool). Basically, it's a brute-force NT password cracker.

Hi!

Well, sound to me you should give http://www.nu2.nu a try. Check for Bart's PE which will create a full and bootable Windows where you have FULL access to NTFS ;-)

Be advised:
!! You need a official Windows CD for Bart's PE to pull all required files. Also check the available plugins and read the disclaimer. This Tool worked always 4 me and never left me in the rain!

Another Tool is - as already Stated the ERD-Commander (you can intregrate that also in Bart-PE) or the Admin-Kit from O&O.

Also there are several Linux-Boot disks out there, where you can reset the Admin-PWD!

Therefore: If you dont want anybody to use these kinda software, block your disk and cd-rom drive from boot.

Greets,
markus
