Past the log in screen, before the deskt

Two problems:
1. Machine A – I have Win2K Pro installed. I installed SP2. Installation was successful, and I rebooted. Login screen appeared. I entered my user name and password and pressed enter. The log in screen accepted my credentials and I assumed I would see the desktop. However the PC just hung there – past the log in screen, but before the desktop. Has anyone see this before? Suggested solutions?
2. Machine B. Win2k installed. I installed a second drive. Installed WinXP on the second drive. I was able to log into XP, however when I tried to get into Win2K – same problem – I get past the log in screen, but then it hangs before the desktop. Help
