PC Hangs at Startup

By victor ·
I recently tried to defrag my HD using TuneUp Utilities 2010 and at the same time uninstalled an HP SOftware for my PSC. This uninstall automaticcally restarted my PC halfway through defrag. When it restarted Vista halted half way through. I tried numerous time to restart , also tried safe mode , and also the Vista CD Repair mode. None of them were succesful. I also tried restore point , but unsuccesful. Any idea on how I can boot up my PC.

System : Intel Core I7 920 / ASUS P6T MOBO / 4GB RAM / Nvidia GTX260 - 1792 MB / Vista Ultimate 32 BIt

Any Help ?

Reinstall Vista

Try a repair install first (boot to the Vista setup disc and selecting Repair when given the option), but I don't expect it will work. You will most likely have to perform a complete reinstall.

The problem occurred because the uninstall software most likely rebooted your PC without giving the defrag routine a chance to shut down gracefully. This caused corruption in the Master File Table on your HDD. In this case, I don't know of a way to recover it except to rebuild the MFT from scratch by doing the complete reinstall.

You've learned a hard lesson: Never allow your PC to reboot in the middle of a defrag.
