PDF form fields

I’m creating a pdf form, using the form fields. In the field properties box is a checkbox for “required field”. I assumed that meant the form author is dictating that field is required and the user must put data in that field. However, it doesn’t do anything. Is there anyway to make fields required without any validation java scripting? Thanks.
