Peer-to-peer network-Linksys DSL router?

by jimc . Updated 23 years, 8 months ago

Here’s the scenario. I have a Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL router that I am using to share my internet connection for two machines (1 Win98SE and 1 Win2K). The internet routing is working as expected, but I’m also trying to join the two machines to a common workgroup, so I can share directories/printers from one to the other. Each machine has a unique name and private IP (using DHCP on the router). When I click Network Neigborhood… Workgroup on the Win2K machine, it shows me both computers, but when I click the Win98 machine, it errors saying “//win98machine could not be located. The network path is not found.” I can ping by IP address, but not by name (“host not found”). I tried setting an entry in the hosts file – no joy.

On the Win98machine, the Network neighborhood only reflects the Win98 box itself.

Any thoughts?
