Quick question: What should I use to measure the performance / effectiveness of the IT department.
The Directors want “key performance indicators” against which the department can be assessed.
What do you use / have you used / think I should use?

Do you have any trouble ticket system? You could use that if you did. Cross reference the number of tickets per the type of problem, and list the resolution time.
If not, do you at least have e-mails of problems and when/who fixed them? YOu could make your own list.

We must have a new round of cost-control taking place, as there have been a lot of similar questions lately.

      Start with:

      Downtime

      Response time

      Staff Idle time

The most important thing to do, is to find some info to show management that IT is makeing / saving them money.

      What does downtime cost them?

How does IT improve the other staff members productivity?

You need to think like an MBA in order to show that the money spent on IT adds to the bottom line.
