Photoshop Layers Problem

By galahad04 ·
I need to add layers to an existing image so that I can modify them as I was directed. The problem, however, is that on the Layers palette of Photoshop 6, the option for adding layers to the image is grayed out and inaccessible. Additionally, the symbol of a lock is displayed to the right of the existing layer the image is on. Clicking or right-clicking the lock doesn't help.

Therefore, my question is, how do I get rid of the lock icon so that I can add layers to the image? Re-saving the original BMP image file in native PSD file format doesn't help.

Photoshop Layers Problem

This is a rather strange problem. Not being able to ad more layers is a PSD5 and 5.5 problem that can only be solved by throwing layers away or merging layers. Max layers = somewhere 99. In PSD 6.0 though this amount is no barrier anymore therefore probably the file is damaged and I would suggest to rebuild by copy paste from every layer into a new PSD file. If placement is important make ankers on the layer before copieing and remove them after.

I was able to figure out how to fix the problem. As it turned out, changing the setting for Image->Mode->Indexed Color to Image->Mode->RGB Color corrected the inaccessible layers issue. But thanks anyway for your help.
